In this course, students will be introduced to central concepts in phonetics and phonology. We will discuss the two major types of sounds, consonants and vowels, and learn more about their production. Students will also become familiar with the sound inventories of the two major English accents, Received Pronunciation and General American. We will practice phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Furthermore, we will discuss some suprasegmental features of English, such as syllable structure and intonation. Finally, we will also learn more about how accents of English vary around the world, which accents are (or should be) taught in the German school system, and how learners of English acquire English phonetics and phonology. |
