The main goal of this course is to further improve your language comprehension skills and to expand your vocabulary by listening to advanced authentic material created for native speakers (C1+) from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Scotland, and Ireland. We will practice gap texts and comprehension tasks in preparation for the listening section of the "Understanding texts" module exam.

Students will practice listening for specific information (e.g. advanced words; numbers) in the form of advanced listening gap-fill exercises with a learning focus on vocabulary, morphology, and phonology of standard and non-standard varieties of English. Additionally, students will practice answering detailed listening comprehension questions about longer facts, processes, and other specific content.

We will study and discuss common patterns in terms of pronunciation/intonation/phonology, spelling, and grammar, and we will practice problem-solving techniques for listening tasks. Students will practice understanding factual and nonfactual information (e.g. attitudes, hidden cues), and will get a better grip of various aspects of style and register. Students will get a deeper understanding pronunciation and grammar errors in English commonly made by native speakers of German.

Lastly, due to the depth and scope of advanced listening material, students will gain knowledge of regional, historical, economic, political, and cultural contexts in English-speaking countries.

This C1+ Listening course will only improve your language skills if you attend class meetings regularly, do homework assignments on time, reflect on feedback received from the teacher and fellow students, and actively participate in class discussions about tasks.

Please make sure to take this Listening course in combination with a Reading course, preferably in the same semester, to properly prepare for the "Understanding Texts" module exam.

Die Studierenden besitzen eine umfassende englischsprachige Kompetenz in vorwiegend produktiven Sprachtätigkeiten (C 1+).

Inhalte:

Entwicklung umfassender Sprechfertigkeiten in der englischen Sprache; Sicherheit bei der Präsentation von kurzen Vorträgen; Erweiterung der Dialog- und Präsentationsfähigkeiten; Erhöhung der interkulturellen Kompetenz.
