This course will provide you with the tools and concepts to read and analyse a variety of literature for children and young readers critically and from a literary studies perspective. We will read different fictional texts (such as poems, picturebooks, short stories, and a novel) tailored towards different age groups and use them to engage with important terminology and concepts of literary studies. We will practice close readings, critical analysis, and interpretation of primary texts with a view to both form and content, narrative perspective, character portrayal, plot and setting, as well as framing, themes and motifs. Using secondary literature, we will conceptualise and discuss fictional representations of stereotypes, authenticity, and categories such as 'race', class, and gender.

Please get your own copy of the text listed below. Additional readings will be made available online.
