“Do you refuse to laugh at offensive jokes? Have you ever been accused of ruining a dinner by calling out a sexist or racism comment?” If so, Sara Ahmed writes, you are a feminist killjoy. This course is designed for you. While the course has theory in the title, its feminist focus means we will be thinking about problems and cases even as we are doing the conceptual work. We will start with by considering what it means to theorize feminism (what is theory? what is feminism?). While we will spend some times on the historical approaches to feminist theory (the use and abuse of ‘waves’), we will direct more of our attention to contemporary approaches and issues within feminist theory (misogyny, carceral feminism, intersectionality, gender identity and queer theory, postcolonialism, race, disability, testimony, masculinity, killjoy feminism). Reading will be a mix of articles and excerpts along with full texts. NB! The early part of the course will include asynchronous discussions with US students in the course: “The 90s: Politics and Culture.” |
