English at school is compulsory, not just at secondary or high school level, but from early stages of primary or elementary school. There is little research that documents what happens in practice when very young learners move from learning English at the first level of learning (at primary school) to the next stage of learning and how they can be supported to make this change successfully and without loss of motivation.
What are the main teaching and learning issues that primary and secondary teachers perceive about transition? What do we know about teaching and learning at primary level and what does that mean for learning and teaching English at secondary level? What kind of materials and methods are used at primary level and how does that effect the learning materials for their next learning stage?
We will find out about the potential learners bring along from primary school and the challenges they will face according to requirements and different methods used at secondary level.
Finally we will find ways (eventually in cooperation/joint meetings with our primary English teacher students) to use stories and authentic (picture) books as resource for a smooth transition. |
