Description

This course has two groups: The Wednesday group will meet on campus, the Friday group will meet ONLINE (synchronous)!

In this course, students will be introduced to central concepts in phonetics and phonology. We will discuss the two major types of sounds, consonants and vowels, and learn more about their production. Students will also become familiar with the sound inventories of the two major English accents, Received Pronunciation and General American. We will practice phonetic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet. Furthermore, we will discuss some suprasegmental features of English, such as syllable structure and intonation. Finally, we will also learn more about how accents of English vary around the world, which accents are (or should be) taught in the German school system, and how learners of English acquire English phonetics and phonology.

All materials for this course will be provided on Moodle. Prospective participants who are eager to start can download the following textbooks from the library e-book collection:

  • Carr, Philip. 2008. A glossary of phonology. Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press.
  • Carr, Philip. 2020. English phonetics and phonology: An introduction. Hoboken: Wiley-Blackwell.
  • Skandera, Paul & Peter Burleigh. 2022. A manual of English phonetics and phonology: Twelve lessons with an integrated course in phonetic transcription (Narr Studienbücher), 4th edn. Tübingen: Narr Francke Attempto.

You are NOT required to purchase these books. They are all available as e-books and can be downloaded from the library system free of charge.

Further reading suggestions and media will be provided throughout the semester. Participants will not be asked to purchase any books.

This course (Friday group) takes place online via Moodle (learning platform) and Zoom (online meetings). For ideal participation in this course, it is recommended that participants have a functioning computer, a headset, a web camera and a stable Internet connection. If any of these pose a problem for you, please feel free to reach out so we can work on a solution.

If you have any questions ahead of the first meeting, please contact me via steffen.schaub@uni-greifswald.de
