Description

Holding presentations is an essential academic skill — both at university and in students' later careers. We will study presentation theory, e.g. verbal and non-verbal aspects such as:* audience orientation and role-finding;* effective outlining and structuring, conciseness, clear messaging;* time management for the preparation phase and the presentation;* useful vocabulary, e.g. introducing yourself, stating your purpose, transitions and signposts, describing graphs;*academic and professional style/register;*nonverbal communication, e.g. using your voice and gestures for stress/emphasis, posture, movement;*using visual aids, equipment, and technology. There will be a number of exercises to expand your vocabulary and several practice sessions to put the theoretical concepts into action.Students will hold four presentations during the semester. Three presentations are designed as preparation for the "Oral Skills" exam and teaching purposes, while one presentation has more academic focus (10min wissenschaftliches Referat, Studienleistung).

To participate in this course, students must have successfully completed the module "Understanding texts".

Remarks

This C1+ Presentations course will only improve your language skills if you attend class meetings regularly, do homework assignments on time, reflect on feedback received from the teacher and fellow students, and actively participate in class/group assignments.

Students will need to record presentations of themselves and will also need to hold live presentations before an audience.

Please make sure to take this Presentations course in combination with a Speaking course, preferably in the same semester, to properly prepare for the "Oral Skills" module exam.

Prerequisites

Die Modulprüfung „Understanding Texts” muss für die Kursteilnahme bestanden worden sein.

Certificates Modulprüfung "Oral Skills" (mündliche Gruppenprüfung in englischer Sprache)
