Description

This intensive course is tailored for students at the C1+ proficiency level who aspire to refine their writing skills in English. Throughout the semester, we will explore the fundamental aspects of academic and professional text production, emphasising:

  • Structural Mastery: Learn to construct coherent texts, well-organised paragraphs, and precise sentences.
  • Argumentative Strength: Develop compelling arguments with logical flow and persuasive power.
  • Linguistic Precision: Enhance vocabulary, adopt appropriate registers and styles, and improve exactness, clarity, and conciseness in writing.
  • Individual Focus: Address specific personal writing challenges and goals through customised exercises.

The course combines theoretical input with practical application. Initial classroom sessions will introduce key concepts of effective writing, which will be reinforced through video tutorials, textbook materials, and a series of targeted exercises. Students will be guided to create individual learning plans, allowing them to focus on particular areas for improvement.

Each student is required to submit four essays throughout the term. Comprehensive feedback will be provided for each essay, including detailed PDF annotations and one-on-one video discussions to discuss progress and areas for development. This personalised approach ensures tailored advice and actionable steps for enhancing writing proficiency.

Course Delivery

  • Live Sessions: In-person classes for group learning and discussion.
  • Individual Feedback: Personalised sessions via Zoom.
  • Learning Materials and Submissions: Access study materials and submit assignments through Moodle.

Important Course Notes:

  • Regular attendance and active participation are crucial for maximising the benefits of this course.
  • This course is offered once per student; ensure readiness for a rigorous and enriching learning experience.
  • For optimal results, it is recommended to concurrently enrol in the "Grammar of Written English" course. Attendance and timely homework submission in both courses are essential for comprehensive skill development.

By the end of this course, students will have significantly improved their writing skills, possessing the tools and confidence necessary for effective written communication in academic and professional contexts.
