Description In this seminar, you will improve your translation skills in a hands-on way: By translating newspaper articles from German into English. Our goal is to raise your awareness for nuances of and differences between the two linguistic systems, and to improve your ability to produce idiomatic, native-like standard written texts. We will pay attention to lexical pitfalls, syntactic alternatives and common punctuation mistakes. Furthermore, you will practice using monolingual dictionaries, a thesaurus, and corpus-linguistic tools.

Participants will be asked to translate sentences from different German newspaper articles on topics relating to politics, culture and entertainment from English-speaking countries. We will discuss different translation solutions in our group meetings.

The seminar concludes with a final translation exam (3h).
Prerequisites

You need to pass the exams of the following modules first: Understanding Texts, Oral Skills, and Writing Texts.
