    Good intro (examples in R); many methods, readable

•Quinn & Keough Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists (2002)
   Good intro, many examples, no software implementation

•Faraway Linear Models with R AND Extending Linear Models with R (2005; 2006)
   Good intro, appears sometimes more competent but less readable compared to Crawley, all examples with R-code

•Fox An R and S-Plus Companion to Applied Regression (2002).
   Similar as Faraway oder Crawley; s. also John Fox homepage with additional chapters

•Legendre & Legendre Numerical Ecology (1998)
   bulky, badly idexed, hard to read, - but: MANY methods and the absolute standard for multivariate statistics!

• Dormann & Kühn Angewandte Statistik für die biologischen Wissenschaften (2009)
   Very nice short general intro in German with R-code and helpful references to more specialized literature; downloadable from Carsten Dormann‘s homepage

Active participation

• Experimental designs such as blocked designs, split plot designs, Coordinated Distributed Experiments, gradient experiments
• ANOVA and regression analyses in linear and mixed models
