Description

If you seriously want to study the language, literatures and cultures of the United Kingdom and North America, you must follow those countries’ most recent developments, discussion, and news stories. We will practice your reading abilities by using news reports from predominantly British and American newspapers and magazines like The Guardian and The New York Times.

This course will prepare you for the Understanding Texts exam by teaching you techniques of how to best approach texts with unknown vocabulary (without dictionary), how to consider context and grammatical constructions in finding meaning of words and phrases and how to distinguish between facts and opinions. Ultimately, we hope to increase everyone's range of vocabulary in various fields.

This course requires your following the news and independent learning of vocabulary.

Remarks

This course will be taught IN-PERSON; i.e. I require your regular attendance. The moodle course will only be used as alternative for cancelled in-person classes.

Please make sure to take this Listening course in combination with a Reading course, preferably in the same semester, to properly prepare for the "Understanding Texts" module exam.
