| Description |
In your modules in English linguistics so far, you have become familiar with many theoretical and descriptive approaches to the English language. With this module, we zoom in on more specific and current topics in linguistics, and we do so from an empirical perspective, so that you can become acquainted with the linguistic research process and develop your own approaches to doing linguistics.
In this basic course, we will
- become acquainted with some principles and central concepts of linguistic research: what kinds of question does linguistics ask, and how do I come up with a meaningful research question? What counts as linguistic data, where do I get it from, and how do I analyze it? What is research ethics, why should I care, and how do I behave responsibly as a linguist(-in-training)?
- get to know different linguistic methods for gathering and analyzing data; try out some of them (corpus linguistics; conversation analysis; linguistic landscapes) in more detail; develop an awareness for the many other methods used in different linguistic disciplines.
- practice different academic genres and modalities of presenting and engaging with linguistic research: how to read a linguistic paper; how to listen to a talk (and ask good questions about it); how to communicate your own research through speaking, writing and multimodal channels.
In order to complete the module Topics in Linguistics, you need to enroll in one of the Grundkurs classes, and one of the seminars of your choice. The module involves two Studienleistungen (an abstract and a poster) and a Prüfungsleistung (a term paper or a multimodal project presentation). |
