The course deals with topics in the domain of language in social media (and more general in computer-mediated communication) from various perspectives, considering structural phenomena, such as graphematic practices (e.g. spelling practices, punctuation, hashtags, emoji), but also pragmatic phenomena, looking at communicative practices and the phenomenon of context collapse, viewing all this through a lense of sociolinguistic variation and change. I will give you an insight into a wide range of possible research topics and we will practice the application of different methods of data collection and analysis.
The aim of this class is that you conduct your own research project. Together, we will go through the steps of the research process (finding a topic and research question, collecting and analysing data, interpreting and presenting results), hand in hand with the accompanying "Research methods" class. |
