In the block seminar we are going to have a look at the foundation, development, political and social structures of four cities: Lübeck, Riga, Gdansk/Danzig and Stockholm, which since the 12th/13th century have been important urban centres in the Baltic Sea region. The emphasis of the seminars will be on the urban social and spatial development in the long term between the Middle Ages and early modernity. We will explore political, social and ethnic contexts, environment, inhabitants and the manifestations of gender in the urban space, because these cities were areas where different ethnicities, powers and economic interests met. Each city will have its own seminar day.
