What is contemporary indigenous music in the US like? Search YouTube and you may find Black Eyed Peas's Taboo joining hands with various indigenous rappers (and dancers) to support the #NODAPL movement a few years ago. Or you may come across Buffy Sainte-Marie who has shaped the emergence of contemporary indigenous music like almost no other Native American musician. Or Supaman.
Supaman?
This course will follow the birth of contemporary (mostly) Native American music predominantly in the USA, its diversification into the various musical genres as well as the professionalization and innovation in the recent decades. Then, in the final quarter of the semester, you will be allowed to choose your own contemporary indigenous song/music act, introduce it to your fellow students by analyzing the lyrics, the music videos (if available), and reflecting on the musical elements. |
