EN: In this seminar we will explore the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The significance of Rousseau is that he is at the same time a thinker of the Enlightenment and its first critic. This explains the challenge but also the inspiration that he continues to represent today. Almost every contemporary ideology and school of thought except for liberalism – nationalism, republicanism, romanticism, critical theory, and revolutionary political thought – can trace their ideas to Rousseau's ambivalent assessment of the Enlightenment. We will read and discuss Rousseau in English, with full understanding that this is not the mother tongue of any of the participants. In addition to the content-related learning objectives, the seminar therefore aims to strengthen the participants' oral language competence in English.
