Description |
In this course, we study the acquisition of a first language with a focus on learning English. We cover the main areas of language acquisition including sound/word perception, different stages of word and sentence production as well as using language in conversation. While this agenda will serve students to provide them with an overview of the topic of first language acquisition, students will also have the opportunity to study one of these areas in more detail in the context of a group project. For this group project, students will engage with CHILDES, a corpus on acquisition data, to study the emergence of conversational skills, such as asking questions, practicing turn-taking, and using discourse connectors and particles. The overall theme of this course will be to understand langauge acquisition as a process that happens in the context of conversations. |
