The 1920s are an incredibly diverse and productive decade for American literature. While many celebrated the ”Roaring Twenties” with abandon, others noticed the shallowness of this never-ending cocktail party, and a whole generation of writers were so disillusioned from the experience of the First World War that they became ”lost”, setting up exile in Europe and casting a cold eye on ”The Waste Land” that was emerging modernity. At the same time, the soundtrack for the ”Jazz Age” was provided by Harlem, New York City, where African-American culture, from music to the arts and literature, exploded in an unprecedented burst of creativity. This seminar will use selected texts by a number of writers through the genres to explore the many issues that were raised throughout the decade. |
