Description

Considering that most political concepts are „essentially contested“ it comes without surprise that the meaning of democracy, this evergreen among the political concepts, has never been finally fixed – and probably never will be.

As part of this course we will look at different concepts of democracy, for example liberal, republican and realistic, elaborate what they imply and how they are institutionalized. For that purpose we will read classical as well as modern texts that deal with the concept of democracy.

In a second part we will closely look at the various critiques that were formulated against different concepts of democracy – or democracy in general.

In the end students should be able to map the landscape of democracy and know the attacks that were waged against it. Especially in troubled times as ours this might be more than just an academic exercise.
