Lecture: Introduction to Phonetics & Phonology

This course aims to give a thorough grounding in the sounds of English and their correct use from a theoretical point of view, while paying attention to the practical needs of foreign learners, particularly those of Germans. What is often known as ‘British Received Pronunciation’ will be taken as the standard, however attention will be paid to significantly different features of General American pronunciation and, to a lesser extent, of certain other varieties.

Together this course and the ‘Introduction to English Grammar’ form the module ‘Practical Linguistics’ (1^st semester).

The only difference between these is that the 2nd includes a CD-ROM with listening exercises and the 3rd editiongives a URL for the same exercises online, so they are equally suitable.

A reader will be available at the beginning of the semester.

Qualifikationsziele:

Die Studierenden besitzen fundierte theoretische und praktische Grundlagenkenntnisse in Phonetik/Pho-nologie der britischen „Received Pronounciation“ bzw. des „General American“ und der Grammatik des „Standard English“.

Inhalte:

Entwicklung von Grundkenntnissen im englischen Sprachsystem

Phonetik und Phonologie des Englischen mit Schwerpunkten auf segmentaler Phonologie der britischen „Received Pronounciation“ bzw. des „General American“, IPA-Transkriptionen

Grammatik des „Standard English“ mit Schwerpunkt auf morphologischer und syntaktischer Analyse von Satzkonstituenten und einfachen sowie komplexen Sätzen.

Dieser Grundkurs (in Vorlesungsform) sollte im 1. Semester belegt werden.
