"The Empire Has No Clothes: Trump's Piercing of the Presidential Veil"
To his admirers and critics alike, Donald Trump’s unorthodox approach to the presidency has challenged the institution and its constitutional, ethical, and political foundations like none in recent memory. In this lecture, American Political Science professor Gordon P. Henderson (Widener University) examines the myriad challenges Trump’s words and actions present to the American presidency and asks whether they are exposing its weaknesses or undercutting its political and moral authority. Topics include:
- Trump’s Twitter account and the constant campaign
- Trump’s willingness to belittle his critics and opponents, most notably the “fake news” media.
- Trump’s contradictory positions on race, gender, and economic inequality.
- Foreign policy and Trump’s “dealmaker-in-chief” disregard for diplomacy.
- Trump’s understanding of constitutionalism and the rule of law, especially regarding his own Justice Department.
- Trump’s complicated relationship with the other two branches, state governments, and the Republican Party.
- Trump’s disparagement of other peoples and cultures.
- Trump’s “you’re fired” management style.
- The roles played by his family, the wealthy, and the military in his Administration.
