We will study American architecture in its cultural context across a period of 150 years, starting from the end of the U.S. Civil War in 1865 and ending in the current year. The goal of this course is to understand the general cultural contexts in which various American architectural styles emerged and how they represent the values and taste of their particular time. To illustrate this, students will also embark on case studies of particular architectural ‘icons’ or landmarks that represent major achievements and/or turning points in American architectural history such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Empire State Building, or the World Trade Center. |
