This course is designed for students at the C1+ proficiency level, focusing on refining advanced presentation skills essential for academic and professional success. The curriculum offers a comprehensive exploration of presentation techniques, encompassing both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, specifically tailored for prospective English teachers and professionals.
Learning Objectives:
- Audience engagement: Strategies for audience orientation and role adaptation to enhance engagement and effectiveness in communication.
- Structure/coherence: Techniques for effective outlining, ensuring conciseness and clear messaging within presentations.
- Time management: Mastery of time allocation for both the preparation and delivery phases of presentations.
- Useful words and phrases: Development of vocabulary relevant to presentations, including phrases for introducing oneself, stating your goal/purpose, cohesive devices (transitions and signposts), and describing graphs and other visuals.
- Professional and cademic style: Adoption of appropriate registers for academic and professional contexts.
- Nonverbal coomunicatio: Use of voice modulation, pauses, gestures, posture, and movement to emphasise points effectively for the audience.
- Technological proficiency: Effective use of visual aids, equipment, and technology to support and enhance presentations.
- Fluency and confidence: Developing the skills to distil relevant information and structure it in a meaningful way as well as to work with just short notes (index cards) and visuals to confidently hold a fluent short presentation.
Course delivery:
There will be input sessions with theoretical background information, numerous vocabulary expansion exercises and practical sessions to apply theoretical knowledge. Students will also need to independently study video tutorials, memorise vocabulary, and do homework exercises.
Students will deliver four presentations throughout the semester, each focusing on a different aspect of presentation skills:
- Structure and content: A 5-minute presentation emphasising structue as well as content organisation and evaluation/interpretation. Students will record this presentation on video and will receive constructive, detailed feedback by other students and the teacher.
- Nonverbal communication and Timing: A 5-minute presentation focusing on body language, visuals, and vocal delivery as well as timing.
- Academic presentation: A 10-minute academic presentation (German: Referat) using direct and indirect citations in the MLA citation style based on a high-quality, up-to-date research paper from a peer-reviewed journal. This presentation will be the Studienleistung for this course.
- Exam preparation: A 5-minute presentation designed to prepare for the ‘Oral Skills’ module examination (similar to the first two presentations).
Students will receive constructive feedback aimed at continuous individual improvement. |
