This lecture provides an overview of the history of the Baltic Sea region, outlining its modern history in broad strokes while also drawing on earlier periods where necessary to understand long-term developments. Moving beyond a political history centred on nation states, this lecture will focus on the entangled history of modern societies and their common characteristics, while not overlooking their differences. Thematic structure will be prioritised over chronological structure. Topics will include among others: natural resources and their use, industrialisation and its social and environmental consequences, migration, nationalism and ideologies of inequality, the history of tourism, and many more. Each individual session will also include an interactive practical component. |
