English and German, as two languages which will be studied systematically in this course, generally show large areas of agreement, but also important differences. These differences are important for second language acquisition and are something of which future teachers of English should be aware. In this course, we will explore structural similarities and differences between English and German from a theoretical point of view, as well as from a typological point of view, focusing on clusters of differences in phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax and semantics (e.g. inflection, word order, non-finite forms, tenses, passives, etc.), as well as some pragmatic and socio-linguistic aspects (e.g. politeness strategies). |
