In very urgent matters, you may contact her beforhand. ---- Sociophonetics is a subfield of linguistics that explores the intersection of phonetics (the study of speech sounds) and sociolinguistics (the study of language in its social context). This seminar will examine how social factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and class influence phonetic variation. We will engage with key research articles, participate in hands-on activities (e.g., using Praat), and analyse real speech data. Participants will have the opportunity to choose the type of data they work with, whether new recordings of their own speech or that of others, or existing speech from sources such as movies, comedies, podcasts, and more, to understand both theoretical perspectives and practical methodologies in sociophonetics. |
