Listening and viewing are fundamental 'receptive competencies' and very important for successful communication. Receptive processes are by no means passive processes. Let's learn more about text reception as an interactive process as it is not based solely on the perception of sounds and images. What happens and what does that mean for our learner's listening and viewing skills? What challenges and opportunities arise in the classroom? What kind of 'texts' should be offered? What purposes, objectives and appropriate activities should we consider when planning a lesson based on listening or viewing? In addition to planning lessons we will also look for suitable (authentic) listening and audio-visual materials.
