Science can be nerdy (The Big Bang Theory), cool (the chemistry of fireworks), unbelievable (UAPs), disturbing (human remains), beneficial (biohacking)… Also, despite all claims of neutrality, science is fundamentally political: in its funding, applications, or its use for political interests. At a time when it seems as if traditional scientific views are losing ground in American institutions and culture, we want to examine how specific scientific fields and theories have been (re)shaped and politicized in their cultural and historical context. From teaching evolution in American schools to the deployment of nuclear bombs, from the handling of the 2020 pandemic to climate change denial, and all the way to the extension of human life by genetic and technological means, this course will expand our understanding of how science, politics, and culture have interacted in the USA. |
