This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the history of Edinburgh from its early origins to the present day, with particular emphasis on the city’s development during the Georgian, Victorian, and contemporary periods. Beginning with Edinburgh’s emergence from its Celtic origins and its role as a political, religious, and cultural centre in medieval Scotland, the course traces its transformation into a leading centre of the Enlightenment—often referred to as the ”Athens of the North”—in the eighteenth century. Special attention is given to the planning and construction of the Georgian New Town, a landmark in urban design and social vision. The course then explores Victorian Edinburgh as a city shaped by industrialisation, imperial connections, and social reform, examining the stark contrasts between prosperity and urban poverty. Finally, students will consider contemporary Edinburgh as a global city, focusing on heritage, tourism, festivals, and ongoing urban change. Throughout, the course integrates architectural, cultural, and historical perspectives, encouraging students to engage with primary sources, maps, and visual materials. By the end of the course, students will have developed a nuanced understanding of Edinburgh’s historical evolution and its significance within both Scottish and broader British contexts. |
