This introductory course provides a comprehensive investigation of the structure of the English language across various linguistic levels: phonological, lexicological, morphological, and syntactic. Using resources such as dictionaries and online corpora, students will delve into detailed analyses of language structure. The course will also explore methodological approaches suitable for the study of sociolinguistics and cognitive aspects related to language use.
A significant focus will be placed on the examination of both written language, as reflected in newspaper corpora, and informal language usage in social media contexts. Students will gain hands-on experience by carrying out small research tasks in class. These tasks will culminate in presentations and discussions, allowing students to share their findings with their peers and engage in collaborative learning.
By the end of this course, students will have developed a strong foundation in research methods in linguistics, equipped with practical skills for analyzing language data and an understanding of diverse linguistic phenomena.
