Lehrende: Prof. Dr. Julia Landmann
The "Introducing Linguistics" module is the foundational linguistic course in our English study programs, commencing in the winter term - typically your first semester - and spanning the entire academic year.
In the winter semester, the course explores structural and systemic approaches to English, its organization into different linguistic levels, analysis methods, and interactions. In the summer semester, the focus shifts to the application of English in social and global contexts. We will examine how language functions in various applied settings, its relationship with variation, change, and social practice, and the influence of its colonial past and globalized present on usage. By the end of this module, students will have gained a fundamental understanding of both structural and social aspects of English linguistics, equipping them for advanced modules in their study programs.
Please also register for one of the introductory seminars that accompany this lecture.
