Necessity, art, waste, mode of communication, marker of profession, statement, and so much more – clothes can be lots of things. They are part of everyday life just as they are part of history and culture. The related lecture will provide a short overview over the history of clothes and fashion (with a focus on Northern Europe/Baltic Sea Region) while discussing the role and function of clothes and fashion in history, culture, and arts. This seminar includes reading a variety of texts on the topic, discussing images, movies, etc., plus one or two visits to museums. Since lecture and seminar form HICUBAS elective module 2 (“gender relations”), a special focus will be on gender roles and gender relations. On our journey through the history of clothes and fashion we will meet a miniskirted Bronze Age girl, kings and fashion queens, brick-layers and sailors, superstars and bystanders, explorers and artists, and many, many more (no dress code). |
