The course Applied Remote Sensing is a study project that includes seminar work (short presentations, literature work) practical exercise (advanced image analysis of multispectral data, introduction to multispectral UAS and lidar data processing) and field work with a focus on peatland vegetation, land cover and water/inundation dynamics (generating reference data, work with environmental measurements). Most of the work is organized as group work. The study area for 2026 is the coastal fen "Karrendorfer Wiesen" about 10 km north of Greifswald All students must have experience in the processing and analysis of remote sensing data as taught in the the Module Remote Sensing in winter term. Course language is English. Field work is organised using bicycles. Course work is organised in 7 blocks of 4 teaching hours each (i.e. 4x 45 minutes) and 3.5 field days. Each block requires the completion of preparatory and follow-up exercises, including the study of literature, processing of remote sensing imagery or generation of charts. The blocks itself include short paper presentations, presentation of new tools and approaches (laser scanning, UAV), advanced image processing (vegetation cover change mapping of the coastal region north of Greifswald from new data structures), information on the study area and coastal fen vegetation. During the first field day students are introduced to the study area. The second field day is used to conceptualize and test field work, including measurements and digital mapping. Following this student visit the site anothe 2-3 times in small groups (group visits alternate) for monitoring the site over spring/early summer. All field work results are organised in a joint QGIS project, field work uses QField, image data processing is done with the QGIS plugin EnMAP-Box and may be extended by tools for UAS and lidar data processing. Most of the joint work is organised in April and May, followed by 1-2 blocks for group work with field data. Exact dates will be jointly decided during the first block. During the course, students will design study projects in small groups. Each student individually writes a final home work on the respective group topic. Primary target group are advanced students with a high interest in applied remote sensing and willingness for intensive digital data work as well as field work. Students of the MSc Earth Science and Global Change (FM9), MSc LENC (E4.4) and MSc BEE (E2.22) can regularly participate when they have completed the module Remote Sensing in the winter term (or an equivalent module). All other interested students are welcome, if there is space left and required skills exist. Please register here in the HIS system, if you plan to join the course. You may also join the moodle course (key: geo) already: https://moodle.uni-greifswald.de/course/view.php?id=28175 Suggested seminar dates: April 15, 29; May 06, 20; June 10, 17; July 01 Field work: dates to be discussed. |
